Leap Into The Unknown - Carolina Centenera, Modas Continuum Dancer

Leap Into The Unknown

Imagine the crowds roaring, oohs and ahs scattered throughout a whole performance, the joy of flying across the stage, letting nothing get in your way. That’s the dream, the dream that all dancers have. The dream that I have, and in order to achieve that dream, I decided this year, to become more invested in my art and join the Modas Continuum program. Without a doubt, that was the right decision that will and has forever changed me.

Before this year, I went to a normal school, dancing at the end of the day, and I was not sure that the school path was the path I wanted to take. I began to notice the fact that my days went by slowly, wondering when I was going to be able to dance again. Around that point in my life, I found out about the Modas Continuum program. At first, I wasn’t sure about it, since it was a program that was about to restart and I was/am a definite bunhead. I was never proficient with contemporary the same way I was with ballet. I didn’t want to find myself lost in contemporary and not be able to still be that same bunhead. However, I took a leap in the dark and decided to join, knowing that whatever happens, it would be a good experience. After about ⅔ of a semester, I’m still a bunhead, but I’ve become stronger.

When I joined this year, I didn’t know what to expect and found myself a little unsure of my ability to dance. I usually find myself being most comfortable in a ballet setting, where I create images and positions are placed. However, when I started Modas, I was placed completely out of my comfort zone, because ballet was not the focus, contemporary was. I was stiff and very used to stopping in my movement, instead of extending to my full range of motion. This pushed me, making me a stronger dancer in my contemporary and my ballet repertoire. I became more fluid, and found myself falling in love with dance; more than ever before.

Following your dreams can be scary sometimes, but you always have to consider what is right for you and take a step into the unknown. Modas was my first step to following my dream to become a professional dancer, but it wasn’t a small step, it was a large leap.
